(The paper received the best paper award in the knowledge management track.)

Shortly after wards Thinkbase was presented together with Thinkpedia at the Workshop on Visual Interfaces to the Social and the Semantic Web (VISSW 2009) on Sanibel Island, Florida. It is actually possible to expand related nodes multiple times. That is, nodes which show up after expanding a node can also be expanded. This can result in some interesting visualizations.

For example, if you navigate to any living organism (lets say a dinosaur) and expand the relations labeled as 'lower classification' and 'higher classification' you will end up with a hierarchical chain of that organism ranging from its superclass down to the genus (see below).

(Note that the expansion of nodes is currently limited to 7 steps, though.)

Google Tech Talk about Thinkbase

John Hosking gave a Tech Talk at Google in Mountain View last week in which he was presenting our work regarding the "Visual Wiki". Here is an example of how to use the 'Expand' function in order to create a graph with some interesting patterns:

go to the The Godfather movie topic

expand both of the sequels using the context menu (right click on the sequel icon > 'Expand')

expand the 'starring' relationship for all 3 movies (if it is not expanded yet)

collapse all the other nodes, such as 'language', 'produced_by', etc. (this reduces the clutter a little but)

You should then see a graph similar to the one below. The interesting thing is that you are now able to see certain patterns within these movies. In this case you can for example see: which actors starred in both, part I and part II; which actors starred in all 3 parts; etc. This is highlighted in blue in the images below.

If you look closely, you can also see more details. There is for example one character which occurs in part I and part II, but was played by two different actors. Can you spot him?

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; is online!

What is Thinkbase? Thinkbase is a visual navigation and exploration tool for Freebase (Freebase is an open, shared database of the world's knowledge). The Thinkbase application is divided into two frames. The left frame displays an interactive visual representation of the Freebase contents and its semantic relationships in the form of a graph. Each node (represented as an icon depending on the topic type) in the graph represents a Freebase topic. This interactive graph was developed using Thinkmap. The right frame displays the corresponding topic in Freebase. Further features, such as expanding / collapsing nodes and performing a search in Wikipedia or Google, are accessible through the context menu (right click on the icons). See the 'About' page for more details.

Thinkbase was developed as part of my MSc thesis work at the University of Auckland. If you have any comments or questions about Thinkbase, feel free to contact me.

Why this blog? I am planing to gradually add more features to Thinkbase (and also fix some bugs). This blog will inform about news, features, as well as tips on how to use Thinkbase.

Cheers,
Christian Hirsch
